I would like information about the marriage of William Simmonds or either of the alternative spellings (christened 11/10/1778 Enstone) and Elizabeth. They had four children Eliza 1813, Ann 1817, William 1818 and Ric in 1820.

William, ch 1778, was the son of Ric Symmonds and another Elizabeth, whose maiden name I do not know either.

The only Richard Simons (alternative spelling) that I can find whose wife was Elizabeth in Oxfordshire.

Thanks for looking up Richard and Elizabeth Simons. The ones you found had their 8 children christened at Launton from 1751 to 1772, whereas the couple I'm researching had their ten children at Enstone from 1757 to 1782.

Great Grandmother Jane Simmons b abt 1852- daughter of Elizabeth and Richard Simmons of Enstone. She was the youngest daughter and here sisters were Hannah Elizabeth and Anne

Do you have any information about this family?

Jane was married in NZ in Christchurch 1877

Thankyou

Marnie,

I can't find marriages for either Richard or William on the Oxfordshire Marriage Index even though I have tried all variations of the surname that I can think of.

There are burial records at Enstone for a Richard SIMMONDS on 21 December 1809, aged 76, in woollen and on 20 March 1825 for an Elizabeth SIMMONS, of the parish, aged 90 or 92. Also a burial record on 30 April 1859 for a William SYMONDS of Gaginwell - unfortunately no age given but could this be your William given this 1851 census record of Gaginwell, Enstone:

HO107/1732 - 162/2b, folio 576, page 22

William SIMMONS Head Mar 55 Agricl Labr Oxon Gaginwell
Mary do Wife Mar 51 do Kiddington
Hannah do Daur 10 Day Scholar do Gaginwell
John do Son 7 do do do
William do Uncle U 76? Pauper do do

Marnie,

I have had another look at the Marriage Index and have come up with one possibility for Richard. According to the PR Transcripts for Enstone, Richard born c1733 does not appear to have been baptised in Enstone, so there is this marriage at Oxford St Clement on 21 November 1756 of a Richard SYMMONS of Eynsham & Elizabeth SALISBURY - perhaps one to bear in mind?

Gaylene,

From the Oxfordshire FHS PR Transcripts of Enstone:

16 November 1851 Jane SIMMONDS daughter of Elisabeth of Gagingwell baptised
5 May 1850 Anne SIMONDS daughter of Elisabeth of Gagingwell baptised
19 January 1845 Elisabeth SIMONDS daughter of Elisabeth of Gagingwell baptised
12 February 1843 John SIMMONDS son of Elisabeth of Gagingwell, sp, baptised
24 July 1842 Hannah SIMMONS daughter of Elisabeth of Gagingwell, unmarried, baptised

The 1861 census of Enstone (RG9/912, folio 85, page 15) shows the following:

Richard SIMMONS Head Mar 38 Ag Lab Oxon Westcot Barton
Elizabeth do Wife Mar 50 do Enstone
Hannah do Daur Un 18 Gloveress do do
Elizabeth do Daur Un 16 do do do
Anne do Daur 10 Scholar do do
Jane do Daur 9 do do do

1851 census shows Richard & Elizabeth in the village of Gagingwell, she now being shown as aged 24 (bit of a difference there!), with children Hannah, Elizabeth & Anne plus father in law Edward SIMMONS, aged 81, Widower, Pauper, born Enstone.

From the OFHS PR Transcripts of Enstone:

Born 3, baptised 6 May 1810 Elizabeth SIMMONDS daughter of Edward & Hannah

More to follow

From OFHS PR Transcripts of Westcote Barton:

25 August 1822 Richard SIMONS son William & Mary Ann, Labourer

There is a marriage registration on the GRO Index in the March qtr 1850 at Headington reg district of a Richard SIMMONDS and one of the other names on the page is that of an Elizabeth SIMMONDS which looks a likely candidate for their marriage.

According to the OFHS Marriage Index, there is a marriage at Enstone on 30 July 1792 of an Edward SIMMONDS & a Hannah ANDREWS.

Thankyou much at your efficiency! I will need to digest all this but it looks as though there is a son as well as four daughters to Elisabeth.

I would be interested in when Jane came out to NZ and if any other family mmbers came out to NZ with her. Obviously after April 1871and before 1875 as I have a document to say she had lived in Christchurch New Zealand for two years. She may well have lived elswhere in NZ prior to that
