Can anybody|help| please.
I am looking for the birth of my OH's grandfather James Strong in Northumberland.( we think)
The only information that we have about him is from his marriage certificate in Bury Lancs in 1919,
His age is given as 37 and profession is given as Butler.The address given is Leazes Hall Burnopfield Durham.
His father's name was also James Strong (deceased) Stableman.
There are so many James Strong's on the census in that area I'm finding it very hard to narrow it down. Although a lot of them do seem to be miners.
I thought a new pair of eyes might be able to help.
Thanks Jane. :confused:

Hi Jane,

I looked on freebmd for James Strong b 1881-1883, and there are two in the North East area;

Jun 1882 Strong James Newcastle T 10b 86
Jun 1882 Strong James Auckland 10a 222

My bet is on the first one, because I had already found this James in 1881;

RG 11 5060/ 16 P2
Cloth Market, George Yard Over Warehouse, Newcastle on Tyne, St Nicholas, Northumberland.

James Hewit Strong head m 30 b Elswick Nbl Groom Huntsman
Elizabeth Strong wife m 28 b Felton Nbl
Henry Strong son 7 b Felton, scholar
William Strong son 2 b Newcastle on T
Jane Strong dau 9 months b N on T*

* Corresponding baptism on IGI; Jane Strong 07 Jul 1880 St Nicholas Newcastle. Parents James Strong and Elizabeth. I can't find any others though.

I don't actually have access to 1891, but I had a few units left on familyhistory online, and found James again, now a widower;

4208/10 P13
Old George Yard, St Nicholas, Newcastle

James Hewitt Strong head W 40 Ostler b Fawden, Northumberland.

The frustrating thing about this site, is it only brings up one individual at a time, and doesn't give you the whole household, you have to pay for each one. So I looked for James, and here he is, same address, but there will be others there, I'm sure;

James Strong son 8 b Newcastle on Tyne scholar

regards birdlip

p.s. Leazes Hall is now a residential aged care home. There are photos, if you google it and then click on 'images'

Hi again,

this looks like the marriage;

Mar 1877 Strong James Hewitt Newcastle T 10b 104
(and on the same page Elizabeth Fenwick)

I'd say Henry is a child from a previous marriage, probably Elizabeth's, as he is b in Felton.

and Elizabeths death:

Sep 1887 Strong Elizabeth 34 Newcastle T 10b 61

So James would have been five when his mother died, poor little fellow!

Hi Jane and Birdlip, this is what the actual 1891 census says:

Address: Old Geo Yard, St Nicholas, Newcastle on Tyne.
James (name illegible) head, widower, age 40, Ostler, born Nthumberland, Fawdon
Jane Strong daur, age 40, (refer next post) born Newcastle-on-Tyne
James Strong, son, age 8, born Newcastle-on-Tyne
Also in household:
Henry Fenwick, stepson, age 17, occupation unclear, born Felton, Nthumberland
Elizabeth Wilkinson, servant, widow, age 49, born Durham

With reference to the last post, (1891 census) I am thinking that Jane's age is a bit off the mark. The A******y transcription says age 60, I looked and thought 40, but on closer inspection it is 10, which I think fits with the earlier census.

Thank you Michael!!

Looks like that guess about Henry works out, as he is calling himself Fenwick in 1891, which was Elizabeth's name at her marriage. I wonder where William went to.. he would have only been 12, but I suppose he is off working somewhere? I hope he didn't die young, I'll have a look.

Oh dear, it looks like he died before James was even born;

Sep 1881 Strong William 3 Newcastle T 10b 59

Hi ..not sure if you need the 1901 census.

RG 131/4843 Folio 67 Page 10

3 Preston Tower Cottages
Preston, Northumberland.

William Armstrong 64 Head born Nth Sunderland Northumberland
occupation House Carpentry
Jane Armstrong 50 born Hornecliffe, Northumberland
Occupation Laundress
James Strong 18 Boarder born Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland
Occupation for James is shown as domestic gardener.

Actually there is a "Big House" next on list called Preston Tower so obviously all the cottages were housing servants and that is why James is boarding there. Maybe that is where he graduated to Butler training.

Wow !!!!!!
Thank you Michael , birdlip and Dargie .|jumphappy
I go to bed and just look at all the info you have given me.
I had looked at the James Hewit Strong on the census before but wasn't to sure
about the middle name. I think you have hit the nail on the head though .
I have now found the marriage of William Strong and Jane Hewitt 1845 Rothbury Northumberland.
This side of the family has always been a brickwall |banghead| so at last it looks like I can take it a bit further back.

Thank you all once again. |bowdown||bowdown||bowdown|

We ain't done yet - George Strong married Isabella Mattison 5th May 1816 05 MAY 1816 Eglingham, Northumberland, England. This is from the IGI, parish record extract, so should be reliable.
The place name of Eglingham made me check the 1841 census again, and I should have written Eglingham, not Edlingham which is about 10 kms further south.

Hi Jane

It was Michael and Birdlip who did the "clever" parts!!:D

However I still have a sub to a.....y so if you would like to know anything about James's wife as shown on the marriage certificate, or anyone else, let us know.

Michael, just wondering if you think that the occupation for James in 1871 could be... groom? Just a thought, it is very hard to read.

Cheers and good luck

Marj.

Sure Jane, I have quite a good read out on Elizabeth Fenwicks parents and siblings back to 1841.

I will grab some|snore||snore|and write it up in the morning, if I try to do it now it will be a disaster! It is after 11pm and not my brightest hour!

If you have the name of the wife of young James ( from marriage certificate) I will give that a go tomorrow also.

Cheers

And who owned the grandchildren.

Good Luck with the research!

I have just noticed that I did not enter the birth place of Elizabeth Adler, the niece. Sorry!:o
She was born in Newcastle on Tyne which may help you track down her parents.

Also all the children were born in Felton, however Thomas the eldest grandson was also listed born, in Rothbury, This may also be a clue in tracing his parents.
