Hi There

For more years than I can bear to remember I have been looking for the
marriage of my 2 x Great Grandfather Philip PHILLIPS (aka. James
PHILLIPS or Philip James PHILLIPS) to Ann/Annie/Hannah MOSS with no
luck. Philip PHILLIPS was born in about 1842 in CARMARTHEN SOUTH WALES
according to census and died in 1889 EAST LONDON. I have tried many
ways of finding any details about the family, the names are too common
to pin down but have never found a marriage certificate. I can not
find any headstone for either Philip or his wife (in later years
called herself Hannah PHILLIPS) who died in around 1915, East London,
which might have given me the fathers name of either one. I did wonder
if Philip was not Jewish but I sent off in desperation a month ago for the
Marriage Authorization of my Great Grandfather Moses PHILLIPS to see
if it mentioned anything about his father or a Hebrew name but
although I didn't get translated I don't think it mentioned anything.

This is my last ditch attempt at trying to locate one branch of my
family, I have decided to try and trace my Great Great Aunts and
Uncles Family's maybe a distant Cousin had the marriage certificate
handed down or something similar. So does anyone know the following
members of my family or have them on their tree;

Elizabeth PHILLIPS born 1869 who married Lewis WOLDER about 1890 and had the following children; Annie WOLDER born 1892, Barnett WOLDER born 1893,
Martguerita born 1894, Esther WOLDER born 1896, Philip Samuel WOLDER born
born 1898, Isaac WOLDER born 1901 and Leah WOLDER born 1903
all in EAST LONDON.

Leah Martha PHILLIPS married Philip ABRAHAMS 1912 a Carpenter both
Living at 77 Brady Street Buildings East London. She is quoted as 24
on her wedding certificate but was actually 37, so I don't know if
they had any children.

Philip James PHILLIPS was born 10th December 1880 and I don't know if
he married, have sent off for various certificates which were
incorrect.

If anyone has any information about the above family or have any Annie
MOSS who married Philip PHILLIPS (aka James) please please let me
know. Finding Annie MOSS and finding out who Philip PHILLIPS would
mean so very much to me.

Kind Regards

Debbie

I presume that your family is on the 1871 census at 1 Nottingham Place, Mile End Old Town
RG10; Piece: 555; Folio: 85; Page: 1

and in 1881 at 10 New York Street, Mile End Old Town
RG11; Piece: 471; Folio: 122; Page: 27

The first child seems to have been Esther, aged 3 in 1871, so we are presumably looking for a marriage close to Mile End in the mid 1860s. Will go and have a look....

No luck with the marriage yet but this is probably Hannah's death

Hannah Phillips
Dec qtr 1915
Poplar Vol 1c page 653
aged 76

Edit: Not sure this is the right one now. What makes you say she called herself Hannah in later years. Is this from one of the children's certificates?

Have found her still as Annie in 1901
Brady Street Whitechapel RG13; Piece: 301; Folio: 21; Pages 40/41
Widow with Leah, Hannah (of feeble mind), Philip and granddaughter Annie Wolder.

Thanks for your help, you have found the family your are correct in your assumptions except for, I have Annie Phillips death certificate, she died on 10th March 1915 Poplar - name on death certificate was Annie, my G Greatgrand father was the person who informed her death. She was working at the Jewish Hospital at the turn of the century, she called her self Hannah Phillips widower, correct address etc. Sometimes they shorten Hannah to Ann or Annie so I wondered if her first name could have been Hannah.

I tried all combinations of index and its cost me about £40 so far and still haven't found her marriage. I spoke to my 3rd Cousin last night who is a Rabbi and she says in the 1890s it is unlikely that any of the children could have married in a Synagogue if both parents were not Jewish or had not converted. I had done some investigation into whether Philip or James were Jewish as he originally came from Wales in 1840ish but as someone once pointed out maybe he came from a Jewish travelling family.

Thanks again for looking and there is a huge prize for anyone who finds their marriage :D
