Including a downloadable file on my website

I have several stories on my website, and I have been wondering about including a PDF copy which could be downloaded. I am not sure how to go about it. I have googled and the only instructions I can find refer to zip files, presumably to cut down the download time. I am also not sure if I just put a link to the file on my server if that would be able to be downloaded, without FTP etc, without passwords etc.

Does anyone have a KISS method for this ?

You should be able to upload any file type to your site, then to provide a link to that file, enabling users to download.

I have very many on my own site, including a large 60Mb pdf file. Obviously this is not good for users with slow internet connections, but it does have the advantage of being high quality.
