the photo is of my great grandfather james edward morris (we think) however, we dont know which regiment he served with only that this photo was taken in Leeds in approx 1893. He then went to India and didnt return to England as far as we are aware. His 2 children, Henry (harry) and Gladys were born approx 1899 and 1901. we have no knowledge of their mother at all and have been told that they were brought up by their grandmother but have no other information. we are hoping to identify the uniform and from there access the army records for any information it maymay not hold. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I found this website last night when I was trying to find out about a now defunct militia regiment. You might be able to find someone there who can help with the identification. :)

I have seen cross belts like that on Rifle Regiments like the Kings Royal Rifle, with a lion head and chain to a whistle.

I'm pretty sure that he is dressed in the uniform, of one of the colonial Rifle Volunteer Corps. The Volunteer Movement was authorised by the War Office in 1859. It arose out of the fear that Britain did not have sufficient troops for home defence in the event of an invasion. In the first instance, Rifle volunteer units (infantry) were formed, followed quickly by Artillery and Engineer units. The idea of the Volunteer Movement was alsotaken up by Britain's colonies world-wide. The cross belt fits well with the Volunteer Rifles style of dress. The Volunteer Rifle Corps had quite a lot of units in India, which fits with your GGFs movements.

Thanks to you for your help. Am thinking of going to the National Archives very shortly, do you think that if I take a copy of the photo, someone would be able to possitively identify it there?

You could try posting the photo on the britregiments group, some very well informed people there.
