Ooops!!!

I'm in the midst of transcribing the burials for St Martin by Looe in Cornwall & have just come across the following entry

22-Dec 1875 George BUNNEY 54 East Looe

Under the entry is a note written in pencil:
(Corpse rested in Church all night Mr Norton forgot the funeral and went to Plymouth instead of Coming to the Church)

Mr Norton was the Curate, & I suspect the addition was a verbal slap on the wrist by the Parish Clerk Mr Henwood.

The poor parishioners of Looe seemed to get lumbered with absent-minded clergy. On the death of an earlier incumbent there was a note in the register that a box had been found stuffed with slips of paper on which were written the details of baptisms and burials. Heaven only knows how many slips of paper had got lost along the way |shakehead
