View Full Version : Accommodation not too far from the National Archives?

We're just in the process of planning a little expedition to hunt down our infamous Hungerfords of Cork.

Can anyone recommend any accommodation in Dublin that is convenient for a few days of hard work in the Archives?

Thanks!

I usually pride myself on being able to find pretty good accommodation (B&B, hotels or cottages) at a reasonable price... but Dublin seems extortionate! I've yet to find anywhere much under £70 a night (yes, I do mean £ and not Euros) - and one website quoted over £900 for two single rooms for three nights!!! Even little terraced houses offering their spare room seem to be charging £80.00 a night...

In England I can usually find a VERY nice B&B, or even a hotel, for £40.00 or less. Does anyone know if Ireland is always this much more expensive? If you know of anything more realistic, I'd really appreciate it if you could post the link...

At the moment I'm not sure that this trip to Ireland will be taking place...

We stayed in a Travelodge last year. You could get better deals by going through the Ireland site but it appears to not be working now.

The UK site is offering 79 Euro for Travelodge Dublin Airport which is about 3.5 miles from city centre.

You weren't intending to be there on Bloomsday by any chance? :D

Sorry, I haven't got anything useful to contribute :(

Thanks Keith, that's marginally better - but still a lot more expensive than a Travelodge would be in England.

I wonder why Ireland is so expensive... or could it be something to do with Europe and the dreaded Euro?

I feel a new thread coming on under the 'General Chatter' category to let off steam about one of my pet peeves... the trials of the single traveller! |rant|

Driving around Dublin on a Saturday night it seemed to be the favored place for Hen nights, Stag nights and Jolly Boys Outings of our younger generation.

Er, great! Thanks. Can't wait. Although, hopefully, by Saturday night we'll be safely ensconced in our (yet to be found) cottage somewhere in Cork... having spent three days closeted in the Dublin Archives.

Do they have an off season? I am hoping to go over next year but cringe at the dble occupancy rates as I don't share! It means having to save up twice the amount of money|5cups|

Sounds as though we're in the same boat Vanessa! You can join me on my 'trials of the single traveller' thread when I start it!

We're planning to go in September - which is neither high or low season, just mega expensive!

Can't help with the accommodation (we stayed one night in the Mount Herbert Hotel) but we visited the Archives in Dublin last week and were extremely grateful for the FREE Genealogy consultation. Wouldn't it be great if all Archives could do this.

hi, im off to dublin the beginning of oct, if you can get to the Library on Pierce St not the national, you will find a mind of info and access to computers a nd micro film, eg, I knew my greatgrandmother date of death but nothing else, i could look up the burial records for mount Jerome and it gave me all the info i needed to find other rellies I got who bought the grave and their address who wlse was in with her and who buried them etc and lots more. if I had gone to Mount Jerome to inquire about the grave it would hve cost me 8 euros, it has the BMDs as well so you acn search there before sending to Roscommon for the certs all free, good luck, beware of Lower Gardiner St you have to be selective, good one is the The Anchor Guesthouse 49 Lower gardiner St, Airport bus which is 6 euros for a days travel on any bus stops outside the door Linda

I have been to Dublin twice and stopped at the Anchor Guest house on Gardiner St. It is the last house and I could walk to the Dublin Library on Pierce st which is a mind of info and better than th national, and
open till 7.00pm mon..thurs . The Abbey Life centre is around the corner for all your certs and the National Archives can be walked but you can get a bus on o Connell st. Its reasonable and clean and not a staggie place ... There is a fantastic pub on the first block up and a internet and phone place opp. O Connell st is parrallel two blocks back Good Luck wish I was there Lindyoo
