Hello, I have John Barnett who left the army in 1816 due to 'chronic rheumatism and reduction' Whatever is reduction ? It conjours up awful picture of the poor chap limping aroung gradually shrinking.

Having said that, it can't have been too bad as he lived until he was 90

Have a look at this site: http://www.antiquusmorbus.com/

'Reduction' seems to be a general term for a few conditions.

|biggrin||biggrin|That was funny! Rheumatism affects the joints and muscles so that he would suffer real pain as the muscle tissue shrunk. It might also cause him to develop a real stoop. And that is a horrible thing to see and pitiful. I once saw a woman walking bent completely over in half. But I'm glad your man lived to such a great age:)

He lived in a pub in his later years so maybe any condition he had was aneasthatised (I can't spell that word !)
