Looking for information on the Thomas Bowness family. Thomas was my great grandfather. Born about 1854 in Great Strickland and died December 10, 1935 Great Strickland. Buried in Great Strickland, St. Barnabas Churchyard. Married Margaret Ann Penrice approx. 1884. Margaret born about 1856 in Greystoke, Cumberland and died October 22, 1946, place unknown. Would appreciate any photos of St. Barnabas Cemetery with headstones.

Thomas's mother's name may have been Margaret. According to the 1901 British census, County of Westmorland, Great Strickland, she was a "visitor" in Thomas's home. Other info given: she was a widow, age 81, born in Westmorland Whitbarrow.

I located Thomas and family in the 1881 census in Cumberland and 1891 census in Westmorland.

ANY information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

On the IGI there is a Thomas Bowness christend Dec 1853, father Thomas and mother Margaret. Also if you check the other christenings you will find the some of the names that are in the 1881 census.
IGI link if you don't know it

Hello Jo,

Thanks for the information. I did go to IGI and did a search with no results. However, the information you gave me does sound like my ancestor. Perhaps I'm not doing something correctly to bring up the record?

Yes! I believe this could be my great grandfather. He was born approximately 1854. I don't have access to the 1871 census so I can't verify.

Hi Judy,

the Thomas I looked at on the IGI was from Greystoke, Cumberland. You said your Thomas was born Great Strickland but if I have been looking at the right family, 1901 he says Whittbarrow, 1891 Greystoke, 1881 England, is this right? The one I was looking at in 1871 was born Greystoke. I have the page so I can send it to you. The IGI shows in Greystoke Cumberland
Mary Jane, 3.10.1847
Elizabeth, 20.07.1817
John William, 03.01.1875
Thomas, 18.12.1853
Hannah Ellen, 27.12.1856 - 30.12.1856
Joseph, 13.10.1850

Hi Jo,

Yes, this would be the correct family. I would appreciate it if you would send me the page.

I do know that Thomas had a brother Joseph. I have been in touch with Joseph's grandaughter, my cousin, in Arlecdon. The others you listed I assume are his brothers and sisters. You have John William as 03.01.1875. Did you mean 1857? I don't know who Elizabeth would be with a birth date of 1817.

Once again, thank you for your time and efforts.
Kindest regards
Judy :)

Hi Judy,
I have sent you the page. The list of names was from what was listed in the IGI. The date is right for John William. The IGI has birth 16.11.1874 christening 03.01.1875, he may be the John William on the 1881 census, he is showing 6 on there. The parents are showing as Thomas and Margaret Bownass.
Jo :)
