Could someone please have a look at this on the 1851 census Wales. Place of birth has been transcribed as Atkinson Monmouthshire.

Dowlais Place.

How about Llanishen. It's in Monmouthshire and there is a William Jones in the 1861 census from there. But maybe not the same one as he is said to have been born in 1837.

Could be Llanishen even though its not the same person in 1861.

It certainly looks similar to Atkinson.
But I think it's something l then a t (it has a long cross stroke like his other t's) and I think there is an i because there is a little dot, sing or ring ending??

It does look like Atkinson the more you look at it. The begining of the word looks similar to his wifes pob (Ll)antrissent (Llantrisant).

Well blow me down, you learn something new on this forum every day! I lived for 17 years in Llanishen, now a suburb of Cardiff, and was about to reply that it was in Glamorgan (as is Llantrisant) when I thought to double check, and there is indeed also a Llanishen in Monmouthsire, just south of Trelleck on the B4293. The Welsh spelling is Llanisien. It's only a tiny village and I had no idea it was there! |blush|

Having looked at the page I say it definitely begins with A and it looks like Alterins or Albrins

I wonder if it is Alt yr yn in Newport but spelled phonetically - with a Newport accent cos that would make it go something like Al ter rin or altreen
