adopted relatives

I have a Lily Ada F Dowson that was born c1888. I have thought that she may have been adopted as a child. My dad says he heard about this when he was a child and that she may have been taken to Australia.

However my dads cousin says that her mother used to talk about an 'aunt Lilly' that used to visit occasionally. She was, however a half sister because of her dad being married twice, and a lot older than the second family.

Can anybody help with how to research this please?|help|

] don't know which year Dr Barnardos opened but I was able to help a friend find out about her husband through this organisatoin.Good Luck
