The man in my family tree that is bit of a mystery is Dennis White born at Sturton Notts in 1812.He married Elizabeth Metheringham at Wheatley Notts in 1835.They had one son William Metheringham White born in the same year.Elizabeth died in 1839.Dennis remarried in1850 to Mary Gray at Wheatley. In the meantime itappears Dennis sired a son with a lady called Ann in 1838 called John Metheringham White at Wheatley. The reason i am confused is that Elizabeth was still living and why give him the middle name of Metheringham. Also i cannot find Dennis in the 1841 cencus but i can find the afore mentioned sons William and John living with Dennis parents in Low Street Wheatley.Any help would be much appreciated thanks.I got my info from the cencus, parishdatabase and the IGI

Received the birth certificate. It states that his mother was Elizabeth (Dennis.s wife) not Ann as stated on the parish database and the IGI.Which is correct, any ideas.Michael

There are a few John White deaths that come up on freebmd between 1838 and 1841, he could be any of those if his death was not registered using his middle name. - oh sorry it is Dennis who is missing.

Dennis (Denis) born Sturton Notts 11/10/1812(IGI) but corresponds with his death cert Mansfield 03/05/1900.Therefore Dennis would have been circa 28 in 1841

Hi Uncle Michael

Don't forget ages were rounded on the 1841, so that would fit in pretty well with an age of 25.

Hi Uncle Michael

Looking at Google Maps it is 11 miles between the two villages, so not far at all. Looks like a fairly direct route.

hi
i'v had a quick check on my disc's again not sure if you already have this info or not,

George White married Mary Hurst 01 May 1809 at Sturton le Steeple.

and I found 2 burials which could be your family

Mary White died 19 April 1824 age 14 (possible sister of Denis?) had live at Hablesthrop buried at Sturton le Steeple

Mary White died 19 October 1851 age 85, had lived at North Wheatley but was buried at Sturton le Steeple.

Re Marys death in 1851.It fits in as she is on 1851 cencus living at North Wheatley and she is not on 1861 cencus.Re George:He is on the 1861 cencus at North Wheatley living with his son.I have searched for his death but to no avail. The nearest i could come up with was Jan-March 1867 George 82 East Redford 7b 1,but he would have been circa 92.Thank you

I appreciate this thread hasn't been visited in a while but I stumbled across this through my dissertation research. I am looking for information on an Anthony Metheringham/Mephringham, from Nottingham in the 18th century. I found him in the Sutton Date Book - he was a leader of a framework knitters riot in 1779 and I have records of him marrying Mary Creswell in 1771 in St Marys Church Nottingham. I think he may be the father of William Metheringham (who someone on this thread identifies as the father or Elizabeth Metheringham). Does anyone know of any more information about these generations, particularly Anthony Metheringham? Hopefully my information may be useful for you too, I'm pretty sure my research is correct!

There are 5 baptisms for children of an Anthony METHERINGHAM and wife Mary.
31-7-1774 Hannah at St Mary Nottm
14-9-1776 Elizabeth " " "
26-1-1783 Ann " " "
3-11-1778 Anthony St Nicholas Nottm
31-12-1771 William St Leodegarius Basford.

A burial at St Mary 29-2-1780 for an Anthony Metheringham, no age given so this could have been the son born in 1778.
