My paternal line has come to a dead stop with the marriage of WILLIAM RICHARDS and ANN RATTON in the village of Scotter, in Lincolnshire on 15 June 1813. ANN RATTON, the daughter of Thomas and Ann was baptised in Scotter on 11 July 1791. WILLIAM RICHARDS' baptism is proving more difficult to track down. There doesn't appear to be a baptism entry in the St. Peters, Scotter parish registers around 1787, the approximate year of his birth.

The 1841 census records show several Richards families in the neighbouring village of KIRTON. The heads of each family are of comparable ages to that of William Richards, and perhaps they may be his siblings.

Would someone have access to the KIRTON (in Lincolnshire) parish registers to determine if a William Richards was baptised there.

Thankyou for your Kirton search. I've plotted a 5 mile radius around the village of Scotter, to reveal the following parishes;

Blyton
Bottesford
Grayingham
Laughton
Manton
Messingham
Northorpe
Owston
Pilham
Scotter

I'd also like to search the parish of Gainsborough about 9 miles away from Scotter, but it keeps cropping up along my ancestor trail.

Hi again |banghead|

Checked all your locations, no William Richards Baptisms, in fact no Richards at all except for Scotter & Gainsboro'

First entry for him is marriage to Ann Scotter 15.6.1813(Her Baptism 11.7.1791)

then the following Children with Parents William & Ann

William 17.4.1814
Dinah 26.1.1816
Thomas 27.2.1818
Tabitha 7.5.1820
Tabitha 17.1.1822
George 22.3.1823
Charles 18.2.1826
Charles 11.7.1831
Henry 11.4.1828
Ann 18.1.22

Gainsborough is the only other Parish with Richards, but starting in 1782
Parents: John & Mary

James 28.9.1782
James 6.6.1786
Susanna 4.4.1789
Thomas 18.4.1793
Mary Sept 1805

Parents George & Elizabeth

Maria 13.1.1794 died 15.1.1794

Parents Thomas & Mary

Mary Ann 11.4.1807

Parents John & Hannah
Harriot 18.1.1806

Thats all the info I could find, the only other possibility was spelling as Rickards crops up quite a bit, but still didn't find a William!
Anyway, if you come up with anymore suggestions, I'm willing to give it a go

There is an extracted baptism on the IGI of a William RICHARDS on 26 August 1788 at Appleby, Lincs (not too far away from Scotterthorpe), mother Elizabeth - any use?? There is also the baptism of a brother Joseph on 11 January 1785 at Appleby.

Thanks very much to the both of you. At the moment I have very little to back up any baptism claims for my William Richards. The only things I have are his age on the 1851 census, of 63 years and his death on 2 Nov 1860 aged 73 years (the 1841 census gives 50 years). The 1851 census gives his birth place as Scotterthorpe.

Pat, I've extended my search to an 8 mile radius from the village of Scotter.
Could you search the following parishes please;

Althorpe
Appleby
Belton
Bishop Norton
Broughton
Corringham
Epworth
Frodingham
Harpswell
Haxey
Heapham
Hemswell
Hibaldstow
Morton
Redbourne
Scawby
Snitterby
Springthorpe
Waddingham
Willoughton
Winterton

Janet, William Richards born 1788 in Appleby certainly looks a candidate.
