Hi all
I'm researching a deed of conveyance from 1st April 1598. The deed describes the transfer of three properties/farms/land in Ayket, Cumb., from Edward Barnes of Carlisle, gentleman, to John Watson of Ayket, husbandman.
The spelling of the village/area varies throughout the deed: Ayket, Acayte, Acayt, Aket and Akett. Edward's surname varies too: Barnes and Barne.
Edward's wife was called Agnes and one of the properties was occupied by a Richard Barne who could well be the father or son of Edward.
A modern map shows the village of Aiketgate about 6 miles southeast of Carlisle.
We live in Cambridgeshire so a visit to the Carlisle record office is a little impractical.
Can anyone shed any more light on this document or offer any pointers to further research resources.
Cheers
Ian
