Could someone help me by finding Mary Amos (b1830) and her 3month old son Charles Thomas. They were living in Spalding Fen when Charles T was born and she gave her birthplace as Spalding.

Regards, Christine

Hello ArnoldSeeker,

What a nice surprise to have an answer to this request, it's been lying dormant for nearly a year. It gives me hope for other unanswered questions.

Many thanks for your time,

Christine

If you do not already have the 1841 census, Mary is there in Spalding + parents +11 siblings.

Hi Christine,

You're most welcome! happy to help.
According to the Free BMD site Charles Thomas was born in the March (1st Quarter) of 1851. Spalding Vol XIV page 604

Could you give some more information on family perhaps we can find some more goodies for you.

Hi,

Charles Thomas was born on 20 December 1850 (I've got his birth cert)
Some of the other ages given above are out by a couple of years, here they are in:
1841 Census Spalding Common
Thomas Amos 45 Farmer
Mary 40
Freeman 18
George 16
Elizabeth 14
Mary 11
Sarah 9
Harriett 8
John 5
William 4
Abraham 2
Frances? 1
and I've found baptisms for Freeman, Mary, Sarah, Harriett, John & William which corroborate these dates.

I'm puzzled as to who had all the children in the 1851. Mary (wife) born in 1801 very probably didn't have any children after 1840. Mary born in 1830 was the mother of Charles but she was the oldest daughter and would have been too young to be the mother of Owen born in 1841 or Rebecca born in 1843. The only way to find out seems to be to buy certificates.

Are you able to find Thomas and Mary in 1861?

Women would have children until they reached the menopause (if they didn't die in childbirth). The current average for that is about 50, so Mary born 1801 could quite easily have been the mother of Owen & Rebecca.

Of course, you're right. Poor woman, that means she had at least 14 or 15 children. Any ideas on why the ages are two years different between the 2 census?

Can anyone who has access to the 1861 look for the family there please?
