James Kendall b 1815 Leathley, Yorkshire. Census records state he was a Wesleyan minister.

William Clement Kendall b 1850 Malton, Yorkshire. Son of James Kendall. I believe he was also a Wesleyan minister missionary in India, Calcutta and Raniganj districts from early 1870's untill 1883.

William Clement Kendall is mentioned in the Protestent Non Conformist controversy in India

Can anyone help with further information, how to find circuit information etc. thanks for your time any information would be greatly appreciated cheers

Hall's Arrangement is the book you'll probably find most helpful. It's an alphabetical arrangement of Wesleyan circuits with the ministers who served there and the dates they served. Because of the way in which the book is arranged, looking for an individual is a bit like searching the censuses without an index - you have to trawl through the whole book and note down each time your man's name occurs. However, it's well worth doing for the information you get.

There's a list of libraries with substantial Methodist holdings here -

My parents have a copy of Hall's Arrangement. I shall be visiting them in April but I won't be there long enough to look at it in any detail. If I can borrow it and bring it back with me then I'd be happy to look through it for James and William.

Hi Mary

I've been doing a little research on James & William C. Kendall. I've located on google book search the following books. Minutes of Methodist Yearly Conferences, they range from 1812 - 1908 not every year is displayed and most only show snippet views which is a shame!

I was also getting confused as there was 2 James Kendall's doing circuits! My James Kendall was listed James Kendall 2nd. Untill James Kendall 1st died.

James Kendall b. 1815 Leathley d. 1903 York

1844-1847 Yell & Lerwick, The Shetland District was (Chairman of District 1847)
1849-1850 Malton, The York District
1852-1853 Easingwold, The York District
1854-1866 Holmfirth, The Halifax & Bradford District
1857-1859 Snaith, The Hull District
1860 Bridlington-Quay, The Hull District
1883 Selby
1884 Blyth
1888 Guisborough & Redcar
1891 York (Centenary)
1897 York (Centenary)

Unfortunately from 1860 the snippets view's stop me basically, and not all yearly books are published?

William Clement Kendall b. 1850 Malton d. ????

1861 Census I can't Locate him he isnt with his family in Bridlington & he is 11 years of age, so im stuck!

1871 Census Listed as a boarder in Framwellgate, Durham, a carpet designer, I believe soon after he travelled to India.

Spent 5 1/2 years in Calcutta District. Then went to Raniganji in 1877 married in 1880 & returned home in 1883.

He is also mentioned in the Minutes of Methodist Yearly Conferences, but again the info listed below is only partial information.

1883 Dartsmouth & Brixham
1884-1885 Settle
1885 Settle
1891 Colne, Lancaster
1900 Aysgarth

Mary, Is there any other resources I should know of? Being in Brisbane, Australia limits my resources available. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Blake,

I borrowed my parents copy of Hall's Arrangement this weekend and am looking through it for Kendalls (amongst others). I started with the ones you already had and then started at the beginning. So far I'm only in the circuits that begin with C. This is what I've found -

1844-5 Yell (later known as North Isles), James Kendall (2) This circuit only has one minister at a time.
1846-8 Lerwick, James Kendall (2)
1849-50 Malton, James Kendall (2)
1851-3 Easingwold, James Kendall (2)
1854-6 Holmfirth, James Kendall
1860-2 Bridlington, James Kendall
1866-8 Blyth, James Kendall
1872-4 Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Jas. Kendall
1878-80 Boston, James Kendall
1881-3 Selby, James Kendall
1884-6 Blyth, James Kendall
1887-89 Guisborough & Redcar, James Kendall

He's not listed as a minister in Centenary or any of the other York circuits but since he's in his 70s by then I'm guessing that he was there as a supernumery - a minister who's 'sat down' from active service - and therefore wouldn't be listed in Hall's Arrangement.

1883 Dartmouth & Brixham, William C. Kendall
1884-6 Settle, William C Kendall
1889-91 Colne, William Clement Kendall

I'll post anything else I find later. I can probably fill some of the gaps.

I forgot to say -

On the 1861 census William could be at boarding school. Ministers moved around so much (every 3 years or so) that this was the only way many of them could get a stable education for their children.

Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.Just had another look at the Methodist archive at the John Rylands library. They have their information pages back up, including information on tracing family history and a list of useful websites -

This is the most comprehensive on-line guide.

Mary,

Thank again for your reply & your time. Ive also managed to contact a Dr Knockles from John Rylands university.

He mentions there is no record of a William C. Kendall only a William H. Kendall, and looking at the link and running a quick search he doesnt appear on there list!

But I know he was a missionary to India and is mentioned in the Wesleyan Missionary Controversy, and he is seen in the minutes weve both seen, strange!

If your interested the link to this Wesleyan Missionary Controversy is from Google Book Search, W C Kendall should be highlighted. Don't know how to do the link thingy!

You're welcome and thanks for the link. I am interested. I come from missionary stock myself - both my grandparents and my parents met on the mission field.

Neither Hill's Arrangement nor Hall's Arrangement is a complete list. Inevitably records got missed when the work was being done or had been lost. But I bow down to the two men - they're wonderful pieces of work without which we'd be a lot poorer.

So far I've found one new appointment in Hall's Arrangement -

1863-5 Durham, James Kendall

Might explain why William was there in 1871.

There's a William H Kendall in Hall's Arrangement of Wesleyan Circuits and their Ministers as well as your William C Kendall. They're both there. William Clememnt Kendall seems to be missing from the Index of Ministers & Probationers Who've Died in the Work which is based on Hill's Arrangement.

Hello Blake,

I've now been through the whole of Hall's Arrangement. Here are the results -

1839 Kendal, James Kendall - Don't know if this is your man or the other one but James Kendall sen. is in Bridlington in 1839 so I'm putting it here.

1844-5 Yell (known from 1845 as North Isles), James Kendall (2)
1846-8 Lerwick, James Kendall (2)
1849-50 Malton, James Kendall (2)
1851-3 Easingwold, James Kendall (2)

1854-6 Holmfirth, James Kendall - Not sure which one this is either as there's no number and I have a gap by both names for this date - but your information suggests it's James Kendall (2)

1857-9 Snaith, James Kendall (2)
1860-2 Bridlington, James Kendall
1864-5 Durham, James Kendall
1866-8 Blyth, James Kendall
1869-71 Otley, James kendall
1872-4 Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Jas. Kendall
1878-80 Boston, James Kendall
1881-3 Selby, James Kendall
1884-6 Blyth, James Kendall
1887-89 Guisborough & Redcar, James Kendall

1883 Dartmouth & Brixham, William C Kendall
1884-6 Settle, William C Kendall
1887-8 Pateley Bridge, William C Kendall
1889-91 Colne, William Clement Kendall
1892 Sedbergh, W Clement Kendall

There are still some gaps and I can't guarantee that I didn't miss some. On the other hand I found two of Diane's that I missed when I was looking for "her Stephen" back in 2005! :) It's much easier to find people when you're looking someone else!!
