My g/grandfather was killed in ww1 . He was In the British Army. His service records state he was born in Riga, Russia (now Latvia). His marriage certificate (1901 Sunderland) says he was a mariner and his father was a master mariner.
His family name was Knorr, so he would have been a baltic German,(Half of Riga was ethnic German in the 1500-1800s) Russian.

Can anyone offer advice on how to track g/grandfathers (Henry Edward Knorr b1878) mariner records and g/g/grandfathers (also Henry Knorr) Russian master mariner records?

Do you have his naturalisation papers? If not, this might be a start. Click on this link (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=5080596&CATLN=6&Highlight=%2CKNORR&accessmethod=0)and order them from TNA.

If he was a mariner on British ships have a browse through TNA's research guides (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp) - click on 'M' and look at the links prefixed 'Merchant Seamen'

I can't help with Rusian records.
