I'm trying to trace my g-g-grandfather Charles Cooper, the census from 1851 to 1901 have him as born in Sapcote around 1834.

As far as I can see, the only Charles Cooper in the 1841 Leicestershire census was at the Barrow on Soar Workhouse. The only other Cooper's on this page are James aged 45 and Sarah aged 30.

Looking on IGI the only Charles Cooper born in 1834 in Sapcote was to John and Hannah Cooper.

My question is two fold, firstly I'd like help in confirming who were Charles Coopers parents. Secondly, I'd like to here if anyone has done any research on what conditions were like in an 1800's workhouse.

Thanks in advance.|help|

This excellent site...

http://workhouses.org/

is usually your best port of call for starting out on workhouse information.

There's both general historic stuff, as well as much detail on many individual institutions.

Highly recommended!

If Charles Cooper was an ancestor, he must have had children. Assuming that he did marry, you should have a copy of his marriage certificate. This will tell you his father's name.

Many thanks for the replies. The workhouse site is both fascinating as an outsiders looking in and scary from a modern perspective.

I don't know why I didn't think of the birth certificate. I've requested a copy of the birth certificate and wondered what date these are available back to as I also need to get his son's, Josiah or Jesse, marriage certificate to get my g-grandmothers maiden name.

Registration started in England on 1 July 1837. Early records may be a bit patchy but improved fairly quickly.

Hi I don't know whether you have the information you needed but I have a Charles Cooper in my family tree. Details are;

Married 1881 2nd qtr to Martha Brown b1859 Leicester
