Looking for info on my family: William DUNNING thought to be born in England and son George Henry DUNNING born in NY abt 1840 and moved to Michigan, USA abt 1870.

Civil Registration began in England in 1837 - Have you tried seaching the General Register Office (GRO) index of births - a partial transrcipt of the index is available online at:
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

The complete GRO index is available on a pay-per-view website 1837 online.
The early indexes are often handwritten and sometimes difficult to read. You may have to vary the brightness/contrast of your screen to try and help view the page online - alternatively, if you save an image to your hard drive you may be able to enhance it with software.

Using a reference found here you can apply fora copy of the certificate online via: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Note that in early years, not all births were registered - the greatest under-registration appears to have been in urban areas.
