I have tracked my grandfather Wm Ford in the 1901 census and this is the information given there. - however it does not give which regiment he was in. Does anyone know how to trace this and how to trace where they fought in South Africa etc I do know that he lied abut his age and that he was accepted under age

Might that be the 64th (2nd Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot?

But what you really want are his soldier's papers, see
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14

Assuming he was discharged between 1901 and 1913, his papers will be filed alphabetically by surname so it doesn't really matter what regiment he was in.

Ann, hi...

Usually for these military camps, if you head to the first page you can find commanding officers....

For this camp in 1901 they are at this cenusus reference....

RG13; Piece: 2656; Folio: 146; Page: 1

To my untrained eye, it looks like multiple regiments were probably stationed there, so I don't think from the census alone you will necessarily work it out....

I'm happy to be corrected by any military specialists though!.

I'm sure you noticed, but there are multiple William Fords of similar ages stationed there.

Hi Ann
He could be Imperial Yeomanry. My great grandfather joined the Staffs Yeomanry in 1900 at Lichfield.
