Looking for any information on John HOBBS who married Mary PEPLER on 14 August 1780 in Westbury. Their children Anne, Thomas, William, Daniel and Philip were all baptised on the same day in Westbury on 25 September 1793, at that time ranging in age from 12 down to 14 months.

I know a great deal about the youngest son Philip HOBBS, who was my 3xgreat grandfather. Westbury vestry minutes show that the parish paid for Philip and his first wife Charity, together with their first two children, to emigrate to South Africa as part of the 1820 settler scheme. They are pretty well documented in South Africa.

I know nothing about Philip's parents or siblings, nor can I track down his first wife. Charity FRANCIS married Philip in Westbury on 7 November 1814 but I have no idea who her parents were or where she came from. Their first two children were baptised in the Westbury Independent Chapel and the family were Wesleyan Methodists in South Africa.

Would be interested in any early HOBBS connections in the Westbury area

Could well be! This bears investigation! Charity was supposedly 25 when she emigrated in 1820 but the ages given for the settlers were often a few years out. Many thanks for this.

Hi Sue

When looking for your Charity Francis the other evening, I came across a second, later, entry for the christening of a girl names Charity Francis. I'm not sure whether she's connected to you in any way... but it is a rather unusual name...

This is the marriage of my Charity - she and Philip sailed on the Weymouth with their two young children, one of whom died on board and had further children in South Africa.

Thanks for all your interest

Hi Sue

Are you still researching the Hobbs/Pepler/Francis family tree.

I have found a few bits of information not sure how you are getting on. I have a family tree on Ancestry.co.uk if you want to have a look.

Hallo Henriette, and a warm welcome to British Genealogy. Yes, I am still interested in the family of John Hobbs and Mary Pepler, although I know no more about them than is written in my first post - ten years ago (gulp!)

I know a great deal about Philip and his descendants after he emigrated to the Cape in 1820.

I will have a look on Ancestry and see if I can see your tree.
