View Full Version : How to I view London archive newspapers?

Many of my ancestors were living in Wandsworth and other areas of central London in the early 1900's. I would be quite interested to see if there were any announcements entered in the newspaper at the time of various births, deaths and marriages.
I have two questions:
1) Do I have to physically go to a London library to view London local papers?
2) Which newspaper should I look in?

I'm trying to trace other people connected with the family and wondered if anyone else has been mentioned.

Many thanks

Alison

The London Gazette (http://www.londongazette.co.uk/) is a good place to start.

The British Library houses the national collection at Colindale. See their web-site (http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html)which has an online catalogue of holdings.

For the type of l-o-n-g search you envisage, you would have to go in person, unless you have just won the lottery and could afford the microfilm copies.

Many thanks Chriskelly and Geoffers:)

My problem is I don't live near London and it just is not possible for me to make a trip there at the moment.

Thanks Again
