My g g grandfather Arthur Haines was, according to the 1871 Census, born in Bramfield, Herts in 1848. Can anyone tell me when he and his wife Helena Tallent (b 1850) died. Also can anyone tell us who their parents were and any siblings? Thanks

In the 1861 census of Biggleswade (RG9/996, folio 110, page 36), Arthur is described as a 14 year old Pupil/Scholar at a Boarding School in Church St.

Christopher and family are still at Bacon's Farm in Brantfield:
RG9/823, folio 7, page 8
Bacon's Farm

Christopher HAINES Head Mar 50 Farmer of 90 acres employing 2 men & 2 boys Shropshire Milborough

There is no Brantfield listed in Genuki's Towns & Parishes of Hertfordshire, so presumably it should read Bramfield.

Arthur & Helena are in the 1871 census of Clapham, Surrey with sons Walter & Arthur but I then lose track of them and am unable to find them in subsequent census records. I also cannot find Helena in either the 1851 or 61 census records. However, if you send off for Arthur and Helena's marriage certificate (December qtr 1868 at Newington reg district, vol 1d page 233) available to order online from www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ this will give you the fathers names & professions of both bride and groom which should make tracing Helena in the earlier census records easier. There is also a birth registration for a Helena TALLENT in the March qtr 1850 at Newington reg disgtrict vol iv, page 428 on the GRO Index. This will give you father's name and profession plus mother's maiden name.

Many thanks for your detailed reply.

I have found Helena Tallent in the 1861 Census living at 1 Grantham St, Newington, Surrey:

William 42 1819 St Albans Printer Compositor
Eliza B (M) 40 1821
Louisa 13 1847 b Newington
Fanny 12 1848 b Newington
Helena 11 1850 b Newington
Ada Mary 9 1851 b Newington

Thomas Benthin 30 1821 (Lodger in 1851)

Birth records found for 2 below, both born in Newington, but not appearing in 1861 Census above – died in childbirth? or not related?

Alice Rebecca 1853 b Newington
Francis William 1852 b Newington

It would appear that William was born 5 miles away from where we have been living for over 50 years.....small world

My next move is to find details for Cristopher Haines and Caroline Flintoff (see new thread just posted)

My experience so far in tracing family trees is that the most difficult record to find is death

Thanks again

Simon
