The second one reminds me of a fishmonger my dad knew when he was small. He had a horse & cart to deliver his fish, when he'd finished his deliveries he'd pop into a local hostelry for refreshments. When he got back onto the cart he'd often doze off to sleep & the horse would just carry on home.
My grandfather was a blacksmith who liked his drink. On one occasion, he went into the London Inn in Summercourt for his evening glass or two and, whilst he was in there, some local boys unhitched his donkey from the shay and put the two arms (no idea what the technical term is!) through a metal fence and re-attached the donkey. When he came out, the lads watched him try to work out what was wrong, but in the end, he had to walk home as he was too inebriated to work it out :)
Not much has changed in Cornwall really - our old (now sadly deceased) postman used to park his van up in the country lane where I live and have a little nap on most days!
