Church marriage certificates

When a church marriage takes place are two registers signed? What I am asking is, are there two original signed documents? one held by the district registrar and one held by the church/ local records office? ( I know GRO hold only copies/transcriptions)

I thought there were three books The church register, the register office register and the certificate that the bride gets to keep. The Church register is not the same as the register office register though, so perhaps they don't have to sign that one - it was a long time ago when I did it and I never took much interest when my boys were getting married because I was being talked at by their in-laws and concentrating on smiling while wearing uncomfortable clothes and 'orrible shoes!
