My Great Great Grandfather John Jones was born in about 1841 in Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog in Denbighshire (I haven't got his birth certificate, or marriage certificate - the village was 30% Jones - he married a Jones, both his parents were Jones, his sister married a Jones). When my great grandmother was born in 1865 in Corwen, Wales he is described as a Railway Porter. In 1870 another daughter is born in Whitchurch in Shropshire, and by the 1871 census he is a Railway Pointsman in Shifnal, Shropshire. The next daughter is born in Oakengates, Shropshire in 1873, then the family moves to Lancashire, to Grange over Sands in 1876 for the birth of another child. The last two children are born in Barrow. In 1881 John is living at Railway Cottage and shown as Station Master (my geography is not good, but this may be Roose station in Barrow), where he seems to still be in 1891. After this he becomes a coal dealer by 1901.

I have avoided sorting out John Jones before now because there are just so many John Jones, but you can't leave these things for ever - where might I be able to access railway staff records? I assume that John was on the Great Western at first, and then on the Furness Railway - where might any surviving records be kept? Any suggestions about how I might research this, very gratefully received.
Cheers

Various bits of advice on the NRM web-site (http://www.nrm.org.uk/research/railwayrelatives.asp)

TNA has this guide on staff records (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=124)
