To every solution there is often a problem.

On the list of deaths for Kensington, Middlesex. 1857. There are two entries for Jessey Bartley.

http://www7.freebmd.org.uk/ Kensington. Bartley

Whoever transcribed the entries made some errors too.

The person was Dame Jessey Dunbar Selby Bruyere Bartley. The Dame part was missed off of the first line and added on the second.

Quite a character was Jessey, she suffered many errors in her name throughout her life. There is one census record that has her as Sophie.

I would really like to know where she is buried.

I would really like to know where she is buried.

Does her will (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=34265&queryType=1&resultcount=3) give any instruction on burial?

Sadly no. Jessey was widow and she left specific instructions as to who should have what.

As a point of interest, she lived on Brompton Road, not far from where Harrods is today.

Peter,

Have you had a trawl through the newspapers? Either the Times online (especially as she was a "Dame") or other local edition.

An obit might provide a clue to the cemetery.

Hi Jan. I did do a search and found the entry for her death, but no funeral arrangements were discussed. I haven't however done a day by day search.

Some time after there were references to a dispute over the will.

Maybe I should ?

The suggestion of obits sounds good, but just in case.......

Was she buried with her husband? Have you traced his burial at all?

Not knowing who her husband is and trying TNA, there look to be three possibles:

Edwin, of the Strand, died 1837
Robert, Gent of Newport Market, Middlesex, died 1824
Sir Robert, Lt.Col 49th Regt, died 1843

Were any of them her husband? Again, any instructions in their wills?

Have you tried the FFHS national burial index?

How did she come by her title, by marriage of inherited?

Sir Robert, Lt.Col 49th Regt, died 1843

Well, Geoffers, it looks like this is the chap if entry number 27 on the link below is anything to go by:

Why Two Entries in the Death Index?

It is standard practice for the index to contain more than one entry if there is something ambiguous aboiut the certificate.

When you get the certificate you'll see what the ambiguity is.

In the meantime my assumption would be that since a person's title is not normally included in the "Name" field, it was unclear to the indexer whether "Dame" was intended to be a title or a forename.

Jan is correct. Her husband was Sir Robert, who died at sea. They were actually married in Montreal, it was her second marriage. He was later knighted.

Peter G... The first entry reads "Dame Jessey etc" the second one omits the "Dame" so your comment about a title not being usually entered seems to ring true.

I will search some other known Knights and Dames and see if it is consistant.
