does anyone have any information on the role the Royal Artillery was playing in South Africa around 1877/78. This was before the Zulu and Boer War. Before joining the Army my Great-grandfather, James Blumfield was a tailor. He became a Bombardier in the Royal Artillery and was invalided home from South Africa, arrived at Yately 1 May 1878. He died on 12 April 1879 just five months before his only child was born.

A good place to try first is the Regiments (http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/lists/bargxref.htm) web-site
which has links for each British Regiment. The detail is variable as it is still a work in progress, but you may get some information there.

The London Gazette (http://www.londongazette.co.uk/)should carry reports concerning the army in South Africa and the Zulu War.
