Hi Im very new to this site and i am looking for records of my past in particular the Tilbury region. I think my gt gt uncle may have been working at the Orient steam navigation company at Tibury docks. He was a sail maker. This was approximately 1910-15. He then went to war. His name was Fredrick John DENTON. Does anyone know if documents are kept for dock workers?

How do i find information on this not sure where to start.
Many thanks Kristen.

Google www.google.co.uk (http://www.google.co.uk) (or other search engine) is always a good start for this kind of thing. I put in "Tilbury dock workers" and, amongst others, came up with this one: http://www.thurrock.gov.uk/news/content.php?page=story&ID=156.

If you get in touch with the Heritage Officer of Thurrock Museum (mentioned in the article) I am sure you will get a wealth of information.

As for gguncle Fred, if you know who his parents were and a rough date of birth for him, it should be possible to find him in the 1901 census. His place of birth would also be useful.

I don't know if there is anything on the Forum on dockworkers under the "occupations" section. Also have you tried the Parish Chest link? There may be a book on the subject.

The archives of the Orient Steam Navigation Co Ltd are at the National Maritime Museum. I'm afraid the chances of records relating to an ordinary worker surviving are close to zero.
