How can I search for people on the census from 1850 onwards?
Thanks Jen

You can't.
The Australian census were destroyed.
Your alternatives would be BMD records, electoral rolls etc. Each state maintains its own BMD records. Some are on-line for free, some charge and some are not on-line at all:
ACT: http://www.rgo.act.gov.au/bdm.shtml
Western Australia: www.justice.wa.gov.au
New South Wales: http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/
Queensland: http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/16.htm
Victoria: http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/home
South Australia: www.ocba.sa.gov.au/bdm/
Tasmania: www.justice.tas.gov.au/bdm
Cyndi's List has quite a few resources listed for Australia.

If you have an Ancestry subscription a number of Australian Electoral Rolls are now on-line.
