I am wondering if any one would be able to help me in identifying from where the 40th Regiment would have recruited from during its garrison duties in Australia 1852-1860. Would they have also recruited locally from australia?

thanks

Chris

A potted history of the 40th regiment

http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~tyoung/40thregt.html

"1852, the 40th moved from their post at Templemore to Cork ready to embark for Australia for their second tour of duty there. On the 12th July, the Reg't under the command of Lt Col T.J. Valiant embarked on H.M Steam Ship Vulcan and sailed on the 15th, arriving in Hobsons Bay, Port Phillip on the 19th October, disembarked at Melbourne on the 4th and 5th November. "

They would be a fully recruited regiment before sailing form Ireland. There are some web sites that list men who stayed behind when the regiment moved on to New Zealand.
