Hi,
How do get back before ~1760? My 5x great grandfather John Bowyer married Frances Broughall feb 1st 1761 in Halston extra parochial parish. This was in the Halston Parish register which I was able to view at Oswestry Archives. It says they were married under licence. The Mytton family owned the Halston estate. John Bowyer's grandson also, John became the coachman to "Mad Jack" Mytton, who died in the King's Bench prison after squandering the family fortune.

Some thoughts

1. Married by licence - does the licence allegation survive?

2. Wills are a good source of information

3. Any militia ballot lists survive? - These may not relate to your family, but may help to give an idea of where they were living.

4. Same with the Land Tax Returns - they are a good way to get a spread of where a surname can be found. Your chap may have moved away from the family home parish - but some of his family may have remained. It may help to direct your trawling for baptisms in parish registers.

5. Do any examinations, settlements or removals suvive for this family?

6. Anything in local manorial records - possibly look for transfer of land by copyhold. The sort of information that can be found in such records is included in this transcript http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/documents.php?district_id=1&document_id=31028

Thanks for the info - just to let you know - I suffer from chronic keyboard dyslexia myself.(todays a good day!)
Where would i find all this sort of information? I will be going to Shrewsbury archives later this year. Would they have this sort of thing there?

Shropshire Archives would be a good place to look. See if they have a web-site and an online catalogue - or you might try Access to Archives (http://www.a2a.org.uk/) whih is a good place t look as to what records survive in record centres.

There are 25 Bowyer references from 1700 - 1800!!! I will look through them all and see if any are my William from the Halston estate.

No none of the 25 appear to be my William. What now?
