Hello everyone,

I have been a member on this site for a while, but had never got round to posting...so here goes....

I have been researching my family tree for 7 years now, and have accumalated quite a large amount of information. I have now decided to focus down on one line - the HARDINGs - working from my great grandfather, Charles Robert HARDING [1907-1996]. I think this should make things a little easier to manage!

The HARDING family ended up in Camberwell/Peckham, but had moved there from Clerkenwell. I have recently discovered the earliest HARDING on the tree, James HARDING, was born in abt 1800 in Hindon, Wiltshire, and so am now hoping to follow this line further back and find out what the family did before moving to London in the 1820s.

I have a UK subscription to ancestry.co.uk, and so if anyone requires a lookup on anything on there I am happy to help.

This leads me onto my first request for help, If someone could suggest the correct board to post it on that would be great....

I am trying to locate Anne/Annie Jane HARDING [1854-1932] on the 1871 census. I can find her on all the other census (references below) but cannot find her on 1871. I guess she will be in service somewhere, but if anyone can help that will be great!

Looking forward to getting to know people...

Greg

Sorry Greg but I am lost here.

I have used the reference give for 1861 just to see the rest of the family to see if that helped with the 1871 search. the only Ann Jane has no family name quoted against her entry also there are no Harding's living at the property?

Charles Alfred 1
Louisa Ebsyabet 3
Mary Ann Elizth 4
Harrott Emela Horden 11
James Winkrch Horden 31
James Winkworth Horden 9
Mary Ann Horden 31
Ann Jane 4
Artha Napier 7
Faith Sheppard 18

Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 379; Folio: 104; Page: 19; so if this is the correct family I am unsure, mind they are neighbours with Thomas Morby!

sorry if this has introduced any doubt

Sue

Hi Sue,

Sorry for the confusion here! This is the correct family on the census, but the enumerator has done rather a poor job! Horden is a mistake and should be Harding and the children are all registered as Harding in the GRO birth indexes. For some of them, the first two christian names have been put and not the surname. When you look at the image you can see that the poor handwriting hasn't helped the transcription.

From the births below I think it is safe to assume that this is the correct census record. Also, James HARDING (the father) died on 31 Mar 1862 at the same address.

Birth registrations for the children:
JUN 1850 BIRTHS; HARDING, Harriet Emily; St. Pancras; I; 293;
MAR 1852 BIRTHS; HARDING, James Winkworth; St. Pancras; 1b; 51;
SEP 1853 BIRTHS; HARDING, Arthur Napier; Islington; 1b; 198;
DEC 1854 BIRTHS; HARDING, Anne Jane; Clerkenwell; 1b; 451;
DEC 1856 BIRTHS; HARDING, Mary Ann Elizabeth; Camberwell; 1d; 400;
MAR 1858 BIRTHS; HARDING, Louisa Elizabeth; Camberwell; 1d; 485;
SEP 1859 BIRTHS; HARDING, Charles Alfred; Camberwell; 1d; 446;

Needless to say, it did take me a fair time to find these on the 1861 census in the first place! After finding this lot with the wrong name recorded on the census, I had thought it would be straightforward to find Anne in 1871.

Sorry for the confusion...
Greg

Also, I forgot to say that Anne is not with the rest of the family in 1871...
