Hi Janet,
the best way to find for certain who Matthew's parents are is to apply for his marriage certificate & then his birth certificate. I have left instructions on your other thread about the Rumney family

http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24553

It costs 7GBP and will come direct from the General Register Office.

This looks like a likely marriage given the birthplace of Maria & the older children
Marriages Dec 1874 ANDERSON Matthew/STOUT Maria Alston 10b 735

Once you have the marriage certificate which will give the name of Matthew's father you can then send for his birth certificate
This looks likely given Matthew's birthplace of Middleton.

Looking for the 1851 records I have come across a bit of a puzzle which might explain the Rumney/Anderson connection.

I looked for a Martha Anderson born circa 1850 in Middleton, parents John & Jane & came up empty. I then looked for any Martha parents John & Jane & up popped a Martha Rumney.

I then checked the births index & there isn't a Martha Anderson but there is a Martha Rumney!

One possible explanation for this is that Matthew's father was illegitimate & used either Anderson or Rumney as surnames. It wasn't that uncommon & I have a few that have done this in my family & it makes tracking them down fairly tricky.

Here are the Rumneys and Andersons in 1841 all living beside each other again, it looks more & more likely that this is where the connection is

There is a submitted entry in the IGI which is worth checking out
John Rumney Birth 9 Feb 1824 Middleton in Teesdale, Durham
Death 12 Nov 1902
Parents: John Anderson & Betty Rumney

Another submitted entry gives the baptism date as 6 June 1824 Middleton in Teesdale, Durham and death as 12 Dec 1902 Mother Elizabeth Rumney

Normally I would say taken submitted entries to the IGI with a pinch of salt, in this case given the census evidence I would say that it is certainly worth checking out.

There is also a submitted entry for Martha Anderson born 26 Aug 1848 Middleton in Teesdale
Death 14 Dec 1880 Parents John Rumney Anderson & Jane Watson

The same submitter has an entry for your Matthew:
Birth 29 Jun 1852 Middleton in Teesdale
Christening 25 Dec 1852 Middleton in Teesdale
Burial: 5 Jan 1891 Garrigill, Alston, Cumberland

There is a pedigree resource file for Matthew Rumney (Anderson) with 2 different submitters, one in NZ and the other in the USA. It might be worth trying to contact them.
It gives his birth date as 29 Jun 1852 Middleton in Teesdale
Death 5 Jan 1891
Marriage to Maria Stout 8 Oct 1874

This seems to fit with what I've found so far & they may well be able to help you further.

To 'Janz'- Janet Rigg, post of Oct 2007
Janet, are you still in touch ? I'm also descended from the Stouts (who came from the West Allen) but my line returned from Alston and went on to Durham.
I have traced your line, some went to the Isle of Man and some returned to
Whitehaven. Maria Stout b.1857, dau of John & Sybil Moore, John's father was William (m. Mary Todd) his parents John & Tamar Cooper, his were John 1716-66 & Eliz Lee. John's parents were Christopher abt 1690-1753 of High Shield m. Ann Liddle.
Then another Chris. then John & Christr again.
The earliest were in the Muster of Henry VIII of 1538 & Survey of 1547.
I'm descended from John's (1716) brother William, of Middle Brae W Allen.
One of Wm's sons, Thomas 1757-1803 stayed in Nenthead (still there today)
while your line settled in Garrigill.
You seemed to be searching for the Andersons, so you may know all about the Stouts. By the way, Maria's sister Sybil mar. Nich. Anderson, I believe Matthew's brother.
If you haven't found any in the Census of 1841, 51, they may have been on I. of Man in lead, copper & iron mines.
My gr. gr. g'father Joseph Stout came to Australia in 1856. My mother was a Stout.
Regards,
Ken Cooke
