Hello, my G.Grandad J F Van der Velde was born in Malmesbury,Cape Province about 1871. I wondered if he fought in the Boer wars against the British.Does anyone know if there are military records, or where I can find any info on the wars from the S.A.points of view. Did S.A. have an army:confused: were there any S.A.casualty lists:confused: Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Thanks
Kate.

If he served with the Boers you could try the Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein http://www.anglo-boer.co.za/ maybe give them a bel and see what they say. I cannot say how helpful they are either, but somebdoy must have records. I have found that there is more written about the war with reference to the British than vice versa. Come to think of it, I have only seen 2 Burger graves as opposed to almost a thousand British graves in my wanderings.

There is an interesting article at
http://www.militarymuseum.co.za/ANCESTORS.html which may help too as it gives a lot of useful contact numbers, whether any of the contacts listed still exist I do not know
Good luck.
