Hi, I have been trying to find the background of my great grandad for quite a while now,he was Henry John Mason b abt 1830 Little Moorfield Middlesex London, thats all I know abt him other than he married Eliza Williams b abt 1849 Angelsey , they married abt 1879 in Runcorn Cheshire and he was a Baker & Confectioner. I have just found His father was Thomas Mason and he was a Saddler.Ive since found that Henry J was a widower when he married Eliza and he was actually born abt 1830 and not 1844 as i had believed. Also sometimes he is Henry John sometimes John Henry and sometimes just Henry which has confused me no end
Some kind people on GR did help me with what parish the Moorfields might have been at the time,we think it would have been the parish of St Lukes district Finsbury, but ive also been told it could be Cripplegate, can anyone help me trace his first wife and anything on his father Thomas, ive tried census but there are so many Masons in Middlesex areas, any help would be most appreciated ,Regards Margaret.

Hi Margaret Rose
It is not unusual for people not to use their first name when they marry. So, there is a Henry Mason who married an Eliza Williams in 1878, the reference is Dec 1878, Runcorn, 8a, 317.
In the 1881 Census there is Henry Jno Mason, 37, Baker/Confectioner, with Wife Eliza, 32 and Daughter Rosina, 1. living at 26 Church Street, Old Prince of Wales Inn, Beaumaris. The reference is RG11/5572/57/4.

Hi again,
In the 1891 Census there is an 11 year old Rosina Mason living with her Aunt Eliza Williams. It is of course up to you, but I'd risk £7 for the Marriage Certificate. Others may know how to do it without expense and they let you know, could you pass it on to me?:D

Thankyou Peter, I will send for that marriage cert which may tell me more,I wasnt aware that people didnt always use their first name , something else ive learned ,thats what confused me when trying to find him .I did find that entry in 1881., but their other daughter (my grandmother Margaret Mary) b 1886 he is named as John Henry ahh well not only has he made it hard to find him by name its been just as bad trying to find were Little Moorfield was.
Thanks again and best wishes for 2008 Margaret.

This is a catch question ;).

Moorfields makes one think of the modern day Moorfields Eye Hospital on City Road. This would certainly have been within the parish of St Luke, Old Street (this would have been what someone meant by St Luke, Finsbury).

However, Little Moorfields was further south of Old Street, near Moorgate tube. Little Moorfields became Moorfields which is indexed in Streetmap -

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=532741&Y=181770&A=Y&Z=1

The 1851 and later censuses show this as being in the parish of St Bartholomew, Little Moorfields. Unfortunately this church started operations in 1850 so would be no use for a baptism of your man.

It looks as if before 1850 it would have been in St Giles Cripplegate.

Bits of St Giles Cripplegate are on the IGI but I didn't spot your man so we're not off to a very good start there :o!

Than you Peter for the street map links, Ive had a look and found it interesting as I dont know much about places in London, I think you maybe right in that St Giles Cripplegate before 1850 could be the one, got a christmas pressy of the BIVR Index maybe I might|cheers| find him on there .Thanks again for your help Margaret,
