I am trying to find more about my great grandmother. Her maiden name was Mary O'Brien.
The first document I have concerning her is the birth certificate of hers, and my great grandfather Thomas Gilman's eldest child, Joseph William Gilman. Joseph William was born in Derby on 10 March 1889. Although the birth certificate shows them as man and wife I have not, after extensive searching, been able to find their marriage certificate. The 1891 census and subsequent census's always show them as being married.
Family tradition has it that she was one of two sisters that moved to England sometime in the mid-1880's. She is supposed to have travelled to England on a ship bringing cattle. In the 1891 Census she just shows her place of birth as Ireland, but in 1901 this becomes Limerick, Ireland. Family tradition suggests she came from Kilkenny.
