Where do I go?

I know this is a real longshot, but my brick wall is so thick I'm ready to try anything. My father's parents came from Latvia |banghead|but the scandalous story is that Dad's grandfather was an English sailor by the name of Carl (or Charles) Freeman who met a woman while in port in Latvia and she had a child in 1885 but never married Carl. Is there some place I can look for English sailors?

The National Archives research guide has links to all TNA guides regarding Merchant Seamen - other guides exist for Royal Navy.

Unless you have other information, I think you will find difficulty in researching this chap - there are two reasons: First, the surname occurs quite frequently; second the spread of where records are held from 1861.
