I have a problem with this name. In 1820 Ann Garner was married NTT Austerfield to George Rimmington, but census 1841 – 1861 has them living NTT Harworth. A son, Joseph, was baptised in 1815 NTT Blyth to an Ann Garner – no father named.

In 1841 Ann is 50, not born in County
In 1851 she is 63, born LIN Gainsborough
In 1861 she is 74, born LIN Gainsborough

She is buried in Harworth in 1862, aged 74 so a birthdate of c1788 is suggested, but a wide search of IGI, various indexes and a good many registers, both C of E and non-Conformist, both sides of the Trent has not revealed a baptism.

However, in 1814 a Thomas GARNETT is married to Ann WARD in Gainsborough, and sadly Thomas dies shortly afterwards leaving a widow Ann GARNETT, so I wonder – could this be my Ann. She was not declared widow when she married George, but no status at all was declared, and can this tie in with the son baptized in 1815 ? If this is my Ann, is she really Garner or Garnett ?

My Rimmington's are established in north Notts. back to the late 1600's and so far as I can judge have no connection with the Lincolnshire families of this name.

All comments and suggestions welcome and if anyone is researching these families I would be pleased to hear.

Eileen,
There is an Ann Garnett born Lincolnshire and living in Gainsborough in the 1841 census. In the occupation column is Widow and it is crossed out! With her are Samuel age 21 a (looks like) Brazier Ap and Charlotte age 17 and Maria age 7.
[I]Class: HO107; Piece 634; Book: 4; Civil Parish: Gainsborough; County: Lincolnshire; Enumeration District: 9; Folio: 12; Page: 16
Is this Thomas's widow, if so, she is not yours

Mutley - you are nothing short of genius !!!

I had searched on Ancestry 1841 and been told no result for Ann(e) Garnet(t), even showing all close matches.

I looked on British origins 1841 and there she is, just as you say. The IGI shows baptisms in Gainsborough of Hannah Maria in 1833 and Charlotte in 1824, children of Thomas and Ann. Nothing about Samuel though. Also, the Thomas Garnett who died before the 1820 marriage could not have been Ann's husband.

Why did I believe Ancestry and not double check ? I really should have known better.

It's back to square one though, for the right Ann Garner.

Glad to help, I don't often get it right.

I'm off to bed now but will have a look tomorrow for Ann Garner. You never know?
