Thought I'd better start a new thread as this might get lost in last old one!

Can anyone find any trace of a Alice Emma Jennings b abt 1875 in Nottingham in the 1881/1891 census returns?

Many thanks!

Hi Rainbird,
Please look at the 1891 census provided by Sue Mackay on your other thread. It is more likely to be the correct family because Alice Emma Jennings birth was registered in Basford in 1875.

If the 1891 census of Alice JENNINGS in Basford is correct, this looks like the marriage of parents William & Hannah from the Notts FHS Marriage Index:

24 May 1784 at Basford William JENNINGS and Hannah WHALLEY

If her parents are Frederick & Ellen, then their marriage took place on 16 October 1864 at Radford (Frederick JENNINGS & Ellen WARD), again from Notts FHS Marriage Index.

Thank you! I am fairly sure the family came from Basford as there were other relatives there.

Thanks again for all your help with this!

Presume this is meant to be 1874.

Now to throw the cat amongst the pigeons (Bet Mutley hasn't got a smiley for that :D)

1881 census RG11; Piece: 3329; Folio: 59; Page: 19
40 Napoleon Sq, Basford

William JENNINGS Head Mar 26 coal miner b London Whitechapel
Caroline JENNINGS Wife Mar 22 b Basford
Alice E dau 6
James W son 4
George son 2
Mary Ann dau 9mo

Looking at the address in 1891 I couldn't read before, it is now quite clearly Napoleon Square. This is obviously the same family but William's place of birth has changed and his wife in 1881 was Caroline and not Hannah. These things are sent to try us! Could William have been married twice?

There are 2 birth registrations in Basford Jan/Mar 1857:-

Hannah Whalley & Caroline Whalley.

I wonder if William Jennings was having a 'flutter' with identical twins!!

Hi Rainbird,

Hannah is the daughter of William & Martha Whalley.

Marriage William Whalley & Martha Rainbow Oct/Dec 1853 Basford

Death Martha Whalley Jan/Mar 1861 Basford (William ia a Widower in 1861)

Did you know Martha's maiden name hence your sign in name or is that just coincidence?

Wow how amazing is that?

Rainbird is actually my married name and Allen is my maiden name. It's an unusual name but more common in Essex where my husband is from. I must look into Martha now- any Essex connections and there's a v slight chance me and OH are distantly related (v distantly though I hasten to add!)!

Thanks again for this!

Sorry Rainbird, finger dyslexia rules ok. Marriage year should read 1874 at Basford - that will teach me to slow down a little!!!

Sorry I haven't replied to this before now!

Have you been able to track down William Jennings? I've been away from family history research for a while (kept hitting brick walls so gave myself a break from going round in circles) so this is as far back as I've gone with the Jennings. I'm about to pick it up again after getting some interesting info from an aunt in the US. :)

I have left it for a while too..i havent found any more about William..apart from he only shows up in the 1881 census..but there is another william showing up in BMD Index 1837-1915 from ipswich...now i have conflicting info on this person anyway..cos one census shows Whitechapel as place of birth and another census shows Ipswich..I'm thinking now he may have been born in Ipswich but i dont have enough proof yet.If you want the copy of the census' with William and Alice on i will email them to you.
