My ancester John Lawson was in the Royal Artillery. From other research, I think he served in Ceylon around 1823. However, I dont know what regiment etc. Is there anywhere that says what regiments served where that I can use to narrow down my searching. It would seem that without a regiment I wont be able to find out much more about him.

Do you know where he was born?

If you go to

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

and type in John Lawson, you will get 28 WO 97 matches. If you browse through, you may be able to locate him - I noticed I born Aldgate who was in the Royal Artillery. It will give you the WO 97 number of that document.

Thanks, I have found a reference to his discharge (he was born in Cupar in Fife) and I have ordered some papers. The next step is of course to track the movements of his regiment but I am not sure where to do this.

Wait for the discharge papers to arrive. With luck you may find that's all you need.
