I have lost Job STUCKEY between 1857 ( the birth of his son William in Bristol) and his reappearance on the census in 1871 in Longton Stoke on Trent. The name is sometimes recorded as Sturkey or Stuckley. Im wondering if he went overseas during this period. Any help appreciated.

And his wife?

I see by looking at the 1871 census entry [Ref. RG10/2877 Folio 46 Page 20] that there's a big gap between the births of children William [about 1857] and Mary Ann [1871] so you could well be right -- at least, in that he seems to be working elsewhere for a time.

The 1861 census shows Mary Ann and the 2 older children living in Longton, Staffordshire [Ref. RG9/1944 Folio 21 Page 10]. Mary Ann is listed as a "Labourers wife". Have you tried looking for Job living as a lodger perhaps in another county?

Too bad. This is quite a challenge. I just tried a number of variations in searching with no luck.

Quite possibly, Job was simply missed in the 1861 census -- or his name has been so wrongly transcribed that it's unfindable.

Anyone else willing to give this one a try???

Consider the possibility that he was in prison or some such institution where only initials were given on census returns.

Have wondered about this. How do I go about finding records?
