I am a descendent of Martin Gibbons who I believe may have been a sergeant in the police force based around Limerick cir 1850 - 1860.
If anyone can shed light on any records that can be searched I would very much appreciate it Cheers

Try www.irishguards.org.uk or www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/guards/f-41G.htm

also I think TNA has records and info on searching for them.

I think you require the "Irish Garda Siochana" or more commonly called The Garda

The "Irish Guards" are a British military regiment and were not formed I believe until the 20C and had nothing to do with the Irish Police Force especially in the 1800s

I stand corrected for giving misinformation. I had not realized the difference until I remembered late at night in my sleep!
