I am a descendent of Martin Gibbons who I believe may have been a sergeant in the police force based around Limerick cir 1850 - 1860.
If anyone can shed light on any records that can be searched I would very much appreciate it Cheers

Try http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search/quick_search.aspx?j=t, and type in Irish Guards.
I also googled the Irish Guards but could not find my gfather. Ireland is particularly difficult. If I remember correctly it is Royal Grenadier Guards, that you should be looking for.

Hope that helps!

The records you want are of the Royal Irish Constabulary (Irish Constabulary before 1867).

This page in the Irish Times website points to some areas to explore.
http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/browse/records/occupation/police.htm

For the National Archives (London) (listed as PRO in the above web page), try the catalogue with a search term of Irish Constabulary.

How can I obtain old service records of a parent/grandparent who served in the Garda Síochána?

Service Record details can be obtained from the Garda Museum and Archives Section, telephone 00353-16669998 or by email to [email protected]. Many service records for the Royal Irish Constabulary and the Dublin Metropolitan Police are also available.

I've no idea whether that includes the vintage you're after.
