What exactly are you hoping to find out?

You say 'marriage certificate' so it must be after 1837. Therefore a combination of census entries and city/county directories is likely to identify what his specific non-conformist sect was. You could then take it further with the records of that particular organisation.

Thanks very much both for the reply and for the link.

A Census search has turn up nothing for this chap but I hadn't thought about looking through old directories. I will have a look on the HD site to see if I can find him.

Thanks

I have a similar relative - though I thought it said "Disserting" Minister - William Atherton - HO 107/1312/4.

Any help appreciated in describing what he did!

Dissenting essentially means non conformist. See this research guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletID=84#6) (you may need to scroll down to #6)

According to White's 1847 directory, Wm Atherton was an Independent minister (capital I!)
