Can anyone help |help|? The family were Brewers in Royston, originally quakers. We know the family lived in the Royston area since 1725 but don't know where they came from. Any suggestions or comments would be welcome. Thank you..

Found the following links on the Phillips brewing family in Royston via Google

(scroll down to no.100 which appears to refer to something on ebay!!)
"This wavyline indenture, dated 15th October 1793, is a one year lease for 4 poles of land including riverbank, edifices etc. For the princely sum of five shillings- (thats gGBP0.25 in modern money) and a peppercorn thereafter. The lease is from John Philips of Royston, Herts, a common brewer, to Thomas Muncey, paintmaker, and Thomas Quinn, victualler & carpenter. The land is in Braughing, which is a small village between Royston and Bishops Stortford. Thomas Quinn lived in Braughing, whereas Thomas`Muncey lived in Royston, Cambridge ( does the border of the 2 counties still go through the middle of the town?) The document bears the seal of John Philips, which looks like a head in a studded circle, and a silver blue revenue stamp for 1 shilling. It measures 19.5 inches by 14 inches approx.. The indenture is in good condition and has no holes on the folds."

Thank you Sue. Unfortunately they are links I've already found. My problem is trying to untangle the whos who of the phillips family. Many of the phillips' have the same christian names over many generations. Again thanks

Have you tried downloading any wills from the National Archives Documents Online site. There are 12 wills of PHILLIPS in Royston, four of which are Brewers. They might give you a lead.

Nah, sorry - some boring civil servant tidied up that interesting little anomaly in The Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and Lincolnshire (County Boundaries) Order 1989 :(
