I have now gone pass the 1837 date & will have to start using parish registers. Can someone point me in the right direction so I know which may be the parish church of Lambeth or Southwark abt 1820, as both these places come up as birthplaces in different censuses. Thankyou:confused:

You will have a bit of a problem there. There are two main churches in Lambeth, and several in Southwark.

If you go to Family Search and the catalogue there, you will find what Lambeth churches have been filmed by them and the same with Southwark. However with regard to the latter, you will need to be careful there, as the compilers had a bit of a problem with it. For some entries they think that Southwark is in Bermondsey, whereas of course it is the other way round.

Have you tried the IGI ? It is always a good place to start and then look at the parish record films for yourself.

Or you could start with http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers

Hello Mike

East Surrey FHS covers the relevant area; you might find some useful information here, including a map showing the parishes:

Good luck

Lambeth: I can only think of St Mary in 1820. What am I missing?

Southwark: Christchurch, St George, St Saviour, St Thomas. Possibly include St John Horselydown and St Olave.

Bear in mind that the London Metropolitan Archives will be closed from November until late January for refurbishment.

I was just using a base date of 1820 as opposed to 1829.

The workhouse is a good one - I'll buy that.

Hello Peter

I was just using a base date of 1820 as opposed to 1829.
I thought that was the case but I've learned from personal experience that it doesn't pay to take dates too literally, particularly if there might be a late baptism or later children.

Hello Mike

They're at the London Metropolitan Archives, http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/leisure_heritage/libraries_archives_museums_galleries/lma/lma.htm, as Peter implied in his earlier post.
