My GGGG grandfather William Orledge Stock was listed as a "Gentleman" on his son's baptism record dated 1832 and lived in Montpelier Bristol. He next appears in 1838 as a police constable in the City of London. As Victorian constables were recruited generally from the labouring classes this was a considerable drop in his fortunes. What happened between 1832 - 1838? Was he subjected to the poor laws etc.
Has anyone any avenues of research I can pursue? (His records in the police have been lost!!)
Thank you in anticipation
