I have got stuck trying to find the parentage of William Phillips born in Bradford Wilts in 1938 according to the census. His wife was Eleanor from Henbury in Gloucestershire. I have discounted William Haines Phillips born about that year in Warminster, as his wife was a Sarah. I would be very grateful for any help.

Hi Colly,

I assume you meant 1838?

In the 1871 census, I noticed Wm's eldest child, age 11, was b in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. William is there in the Wales Census 1861, groom and gardener, age 26 (?), b Wilts, Bradford, with Eleanor and Frederick Wm age 1.

I can't find him in 1851 or 41 in England or Wales, but on freeBMD there is this marriage;

Dec Quarter 1859 Phillips William m Eleanor Hopkin Abergavenny 11a 155

If you order the marriage certificate, it will give you the names of the bride and grooms fathers, amongst other things.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Birdlip and Elley for the info. I had not found the 1841 Census entry and it looks quite hopeful. It is hard to be certain about the marriage to Eleanor Hopkin as Eleanor was from Henley Glos. and there is also a marriage recorded William Philliips to Eleanor Parsons in 1858 at Clifton in Glos. So it looks like I will have to invest in some certificates which I was trying to avoid. Regards Colly
