Hi I am new to this site. I am researching the surnames Watson from Newcastle-on-Tyne and Nesbit from the Glendale area in Northumberland.I have progressed quite well with Nesbit as far back to 1766, but Watson being such a common surname!!!I have established my Grandfather William b1874, married to Mary Grant, Gr Grandfather William b 1850c married to Ellen n/k and John Watson Gr Gr Grandfather b1806c no record of wife. Grandfather William b1874, married to Mary Grant, Gr Grandfather William b 1850c married to Ellen n/k

Before you can get back further with any certainty, you need to establish the maiden name of the mother of your grandfather - this is done by the purchase of William's birth certificate.

Then armed with her maiden name, you should be able to easily find the right marriage. Else, how are you to know if you are following the right Watson family?

Christine :)
